At Carnagill Community Primary School we believe children should learn to respect and care for themselves, each other, all adults, their community and their environment to enable them to be informed, active, responsible and healthy citizens. Teaching PSHE helps children to understand how to keep themselves safe; mentally and physically healthy and are prepared for life and work.  PSHE covers issues such as online and offline safety, relationships, health and careers taught in a way which is appropriate to the age and maturity of the pupils.

This aim is achieved through discrete PSHE lessons, delivering the North Yorkshire PSHE and Citizenship curriculum, where appropriate, is also linked to wider areas of the curriculum. PSHE is explored through regular circle time, collective worship time, the school value and British values, enhancement days, themed weeks and extra-curricular activities. PSHE is embedded across the whole school through our school ethos and culture.

The PSHE curriculum is further enhanced through school activities such as The School Council and Play Leaders. These provide leadership opportunities for a wide range of pupils.

Sex and Relationships Education (SRE)

Although this is not a statutory part of the 2014 curriculum we believe SRE has a vital role to play in the personal, emotional and social development of our children. The SRE curriculum covers three main elements: Attitudes and values, personal and social skills and knowledge and understanding. These are mostly delivered by the class teacher as part of PSHE, RE, Science and PE lessons.  Opportunities may also arise as a result of children’s enquiries, events in a child’s home life (such as a marriage, pregnancy etc) or other circumstances. E-safety (staying safe online) is covered as part of the Computing curriculum. Please see our SRE policy for further details.
